Lake Kerkini with Mount Beles

Serres · Northern Greece

Lake Kerkini

A living wetland between mountains, water and forest.

Where it is

The lake lies in the north‑west of Serres prefecture, where the Kerkini (Beles) and Krousia mountain ranges meet. The Strymonas river feeds the lake, and its delta forms the flooded forest.

A haven for birds

River, channels, marshes, flooded fields, farmland and mountain habitats surround the lake, which is rich in birdlife all year. In spring birds nest in the flooded forest, while in autumn and winter large gatherings of flamingos, pelicans and cormorants form.

National Park

The area forms Lake Kerkini National Park. We respect the ecosystem: we move quietly, keep our distance from wildlife and leave no trace.
